To sleep, perchance to dream

Six hours sleep. Wow, from eleven to five. That is quite something. Mind you I was flippin' exhausted! So, perhaps a better day for me today. Things always seem insurmountable when one is sleep deprived. Now all I have to do is get some coffee and breakfast and I am off.

Last night was good fun: clothes, wine, Sharon's amazing laugh. We were laughing just listening to her. I didn't buy anything as the clothes were not my thing, rather more classic than I would wear. And V has just said that I can order the beautiful long velvet coat that they have in Nomads, so no competition really. I prefer the eccentric/flamboyant look, can you tell?

Check out Nomads here, it's a treat!

I took my crochet and did almost half of Sara's shrug, the only problem is that I think I'll need another ball of wool. I'll take a pic of the work so far and post it up later. This blog has been pictureless for rather too long I think but have found the card reader now so back to normal soon.

Have a soft, shruggable, velvety day, what ever you are doing!

Well My Friends

It has been a hellish day frankly. The kidlings are making stew of me and insomnia sucks big time. I am on my knees.

So what am I going to do tonight? Thats right...get out the glad rags and go out with the girls.

I am off out to Kellys with Sara and Ann, a recipe for fun if ever there was one, and I will attempt to have a ball unless the presence of sympathetic females doesn't turn me into a heap of teary jelly.
I will let you know how it went!

Have a great day and try and get some sleep for me will you?

Apologies

For lack of blogging, but I have not been crafting either so there is not that much to blog about. Other than, listen to this...I have a comission! Wooo-hoo! Out shopping with Sara and she fell in love with a shrug in M&S. They were asking £20 for a rectangle of chenille-honestly. So of course I said, heck I could make one for you, don't waste your money. And she took me up on it!
So that is it really. Now have the pleasure of spinning something for a purpose and it is not my fault that I now have to put an order in to Winghams now is it?

A Trail of the Unexpected

I saw a butterfly in Tescos today. Waiting to pay for my groceries, it flapped past, obviously looking for someone and then it wandered off to the cafe for a espresso and rasberry muffin. As it passed I watched the faces of the people who saw it light up...Look, a butterfly! It left a trail of joy behind it.

It lifted my heart too and so I am telling you out there about it.
Psst! Have a happy day, pass it on.

Cordell Again

Saturday saw us at the Bedwellty Park in Tredgar for this year's Cordell Festival. ienjoyed it but that was more to do with the company and the fact that it was a fine day, the Cordell players had not been invited to attend which is rather disheartening, but we were good enough to aska long to mingle with the crowd in character. That kind of thing pretty much leaves me cold - approaching strangers reminds me of the cold calling days - yuk. But I had the useful character quirk that Elianor Mortymer has of being a spinner, off to the guild and swipe a wheel. I did swipe it too, there was no time to ask and put my name down in the equipment book. It will be returned Monday, not really swiped. So I hid behind the spinning wheel and hung out with Hywel and Iolo, Morfydd declined to dress up, but Elizabeth went half way and consented to card for me and put a bonnet on for the show of it. We talked to quite a few people who came to us rather than having to go to them. Yay!

Hopefully I will have a pic to post up soon as my camera had depleteed its batteries and Catherine/Morfydd is Affirmation Photography,( check it out to see some beautiful wedding pics btw.) and she took some pics that will go up on the Guild site too.

From there it was an impromtu move to Swansea Park and the celebration of the Proms. Great fun, thousands of people, great weather, fireworks and Lakme Flower Duet among others (absolute favourite duet ever - what a treat)

Osark

Sounds like something an otter would say doesn't it? But in fact it is in South east Alabama and has the privilege of holding the most impressive house that I have ever been inside. It was built for hospitality in the grand Southern tradition and the folk that live there, Sharron and Butch, are just about the finest examples of generous, thoughtful hosts that anyone could find anywhere.

I will post up the pictures of our trip as soon as i find the camera and I am afraid that words do not do justice to the place. Woods, a lake, a large cedar cabin style house with a massive veranda, humming birds whizzing round like feathered green bullets, gentle warmth, soft hum of voices in that delightful drawl and me getting high on bbq, crochet and the green smell of cedar.

I went in the lake, which if you knew me you would know how uncharacteristic that is of me, not a water person really, but it was an opportunity that will not come my way again for a very long time. Paddled round in a big inner tube while V took the girls sailing on a little boat. Lily in particular loved that lake and stayed in for about an hour. It was such a joy for me to see my kids rambling around outdoors, getting wet, getting dirty, getting clean again, stuffing bbq, getting in the lake again, paddling, playing in the sand, chasing tree frogs. What an amazing place, an amazing time altogether really.

Thanks America, we had a ball.

Jet Lag

Someone really should write a poem about jet lag. I am surprised that Wendy Cope has not done one actually. The way your mouth dries up and your eyes ache and your head is stuffed with straw and the way that your kids have zero difficulty sleeping ound the clock and are fresh as daisies the next day while you feel like you have been eaten by wolves and then thrown up.

Someone shoot me please

Hey Honey I'm Home!

Back at long last. What a trip!... but I am too wrecked to write much just now. Had a fantastic last weekend in Osark in the most amazing house but will write it all up later. It has been an amazing month, so glad that I have this blog to remind me of all that we have done. Back to spinning before too much longer...

My day has been made...

Just this second I have seen a hummingbird. With my own two eyes, a hummingbird in Sadie's garden. Amazing! It was tiny, about the same size as a wren, emerald green with a cotton white throat, sipping at a rose. Who needs fire flies when there are humming birds to be had?

Tennesee ii

The following day, yesterday in fact but I am writing this at 2 am my time so bear with me if I get confused... anyway... We were due back in Huntsville and off we went until I saw the sign for the Jack Daniels distillery. Could not pass it without taking a look, even though I don't drink it regularly, it is very good in cocacola. So we drove off the track a bit (it had to be at least forty miles out of our way) and visited...only to find that the tour involved an hour of walking over ground unsuitable for push chairs. Neither of us fancied carrying the girls for that length of time so we passed, but I did not leave empty handed...Come on, do you think I would not buy an award winning whiskey when it was right under my nose? Besides the pound is so strong to the dollar right now...etc etc. V forked out uncomplaining I toddled off a happy girl, Lily on one hip, JD on the other. Can you tell I'm a Christian by the way?

The town of Lynchburg was only a few hundred yards away from the distillery and despite its rather suspiciously nasty name or am I the only one that thinks "mob" when they hear that? It is a charming place. A proper small town America/Waltons type place. It even had an old guy sitting on a rocking chair on the side walk (raised and wooden, so Seven Brides for Seven Brothers!) I think the town council must pay him to sit there just for the tourists, of which there were many. Yes it was a tourist trap, but hey, it was so cute, who cares!

First stop...the Country Kitchen with an eat all you like lunch buffet. Fried chicken, mashed potaotes, green beans, rice, and amazing sweet sauce. Went back for second helpings, hush puppies (not the shoes, a kind of battered burger) fried squash and broccoli. Eating for fun I was
...and I had pudding Apple and pear cobbler and I swear I have never in my life tasted anything so good. The top was like a kind of heavy batter, the fruit had been canned in syrup and was achingly sweet and parts had caremelised. So, so good. It will tell you how sweet it was that when I took a sip of coke after a bite, the drink was surprisingly bland. Oh dear me. I resisted second helpings even though I wanted some very much. I contented myself with a cup of Blue Bunny butter pecan ice cream. The girls had strawberry and mint choc chip. V just stared in awe at his womenfolk demolishing the food like a plague of locusts. He had restrained himself to the catfish. I had tried catfish at the Gulf and had no difficulty sticking to the fried chicken.

Off then around the stores. Found a few pressies, yay! And best of all I wandered into a co operative store of the ladies of the county and found myself a Little House on the Prarie bonnet. Just like Elizabeth Ingalls wears at the start. I have no idea where I will wear it, but I have wanted one since I was a child. Hurrah! I will wear it to spinning demonstrations...the other guild members will have a fit. Neve mind, it's a laugh innit?

Back in Huntville now but tomorrow off to Osark, where ever that is. Todd and Steph have been grounded in Oklahoma due to bad weather and are driving back tonight, a twelve hour drive apparently. I think they are nuts, but they really want to go to Osark.

From Osark it is off to Atlanta and home on the 3rd so, this might be the last post from me for a while. Unless there is a 'puter at the cousin's house. But maybe not, so if not...see you in Blighty!
Take care of yourselves

Tennesee

Well, it was only two nights but what a trip! First we had to find our way out of Huntsville. Managed that relatively painlessly. North we go. Booked into a Red Roof Inn which is like the motorway motels in the UK only with a pool that is actually warm.
Nashville that evening, took the kidlings and high expectations. We were there oooh ten minutes...broadcasting tourist on FM and medium wave. I am amazed we were not mugged immediately. Two tramps/panhandlers/beggars later and I have realised all over again why I loathe cities. We persevered however and heard several street singers. The Oprey was shut :( and the kids were getting crotchety. I voted back to the hotel and have a go the following day with daylight and energy to back us up.

The following morning however, we found a tourist leaflet advertising Mansaker Station, a little north east from Nashville and so off we went. Neither of us being able to resist a living history tour. And man it was great. The guide (Bill Maddocks - very informative and sweet too) really knew his stuff and was interested in all historical stuff, including Cordell. He was a carpenter and man of all work about the place. He was in charge of the fort area. I would call it a stockade. Wooden defenses and huts inside. There were detailed props of frontier living in the late 1700's and it was fascinating.

Off to the Cracker Barrel for lunch and I ate until I was about ready to pop. Beef stew, mashed potatoes, turnip greens, fried okra (They were V's but he didn't like them) biscuits and corn bread muffins which were fabulous. No room for pudding which was a shame as there was apple dumpling but a girl has got to know her limitations...

Back to the fort and then onto the house built eight years later than the station but far more civilised in feel obviously. And the lady there (Miss Laura) was a spinner! She used a double drive wheel and she was very good to chat to. Really made me want to get back to the spinning I had left behind ! There was a walking wheel on display in the house but neither she not I knew how to work it so we both remain in ignorance as yet.

Quiet evening in the hotel. Kids worn out from the heat and playing in the dirt just like any frontier brat. Great fun.

Nashville here we come

Is the centre of country ready for V the biggest fan of electro/synth this side of the eighties. I don't know. It depends on whether we get there of course, considering how desperately lost we got on one grid of Orange Beach...am I troubling trouble? It will be an awfully big adventure...didn't Peter Pan say that about dying? Can you tell I am aprehensive, leaving my comfort zone and all that?

So see you guys in a few days, there is probably internet connection at the hotel, but I don't know for sure. I will probably have a good few yarns to tell you all anyway.

Awards!

Hey, just realised I have been nominated for a rocking girl blogger award by Amanda. Thanks a lot! So I get to put one of those cool pink buttons up. Yay!

Of course now I have to think of people to pass it on to and there are few blogs that I read that don't already have them. So I will have to think about it.
Sara of course because she is such a good friend and is an amazing person all told really. She has only been blogging for a short while but she has a way with words for certain.
I will have to think of the others. Patios has one already, so does Empire Girl, Nicole and Angora...this is going to be difficult. I think the Sheriff has one too... No, there is no badge up, so The Sheriff, her blog is great fun to read...knitting, design, teenagers and a creatively bad tempered cat. Cool

Clare at Sunflower Sky! I nominate her cos she is a lovely person, always leaves friendly and encouraging comments and she is a talented poet and photographer too.

Tired Girl...

Man, I am whacked. I am tired of travelling and glad to stay here in Huntsville for a few days. I finished the cushion cover in Mary Catherine's house and Steph liked the yarn so much she asked if I would make her a knee throw. The yarn is very chunky and it's a 8mm hook so it shouldn't take long.
The conference today was very interesting. Steph and I spoke for a bit and as usual people were very gracious in their response. The Southerners are very friendly, hospitable people, it is true. Just about every woman in the place went up for prayer and they were really responsive.
An hours journey to Huntsville then and an evening chilling out, blogging, catching up on other folks blogs and a little crochet to do before bathing the kidlings and bed.
Did I say I am wrecked?
Quiet day tomorrow and Monday and then V, the kids and I are off to Nashville for a few days on Tuesday while the Preselys head off to Oklahoma for mission debriefing...I kid you not! That is what they call it!
Then it is off to Osark for the family reunion weekend, then Atlanta and the flight home! This next week will go quickly I am sure.
See you soon folks
love you lots

Off Again!

Back to Huntsville today via a women's conference. I don't think we will be speaking, more like a networking opportunity...oh Lord, No! Not a networker me, too much foot in mouth disease.
Anyway as long as I smile and keep quiet, I should not lose Todd and Steph too much support!
See you much later tonight, busy busy busy!
Have a great day folks

Quiet Day

Getting over al the travelling today, getting the sand out of our shoes and chilling out in the woods.
I wandered into a mega Wal-mart yesterday and found a HUGE yarn and sewing department. Could not resist. Massive (plastic but we cannot have it all) crochet hooks in jewel colours and lion brand chunky yarn in a colour way called Prarie. So I am going to do an undemanding granny squre cushion cover. Found some silk exactly the right colour to turn up the hems on my fishermens trousers too, so a quiet crafty day today. Lovely
Thanks for all the comments guys. I am really enjoying this trip. Got a sudden blast of homesickness this morning though and had to leave the breakfast table to pull myself together. Funny how I am enjoying myself so much and yet a picture of sheep and Welsh mountains which I was shown as an act of kindness just set me on a hiraeth pang! I'm okay now though and will probably enjoy a dip in the pool this afternoon. It is not as hot here as it was on the beach. Probably in the high seventies now, but the quality of light is different. You can feel the breath of autumn here. It won't be long now...

We have moved again!

Birmingham now...I have no idea where in Alabama it is as I am now utterly disorientated. We will be here a couple of days and then moving on back to Huntsville.
We were eight hours in the car today and I am wrecked. So not much happened really other than I saw an armadillo and we were trailed by a police car for half a mile. We reckon they were hoping that Steph would break the speed limit. I was kind of hoping that they would pull us over too, kind of fun in a weird British kind of way, but no...Steph had cruise control on and they sloped off in search of more amusing prey.
We are staying now with Mary Catherine and Dan, friends of Todd and Steph from way back. Their house is pretty stunning. Big cedar cabin style with a screened in porch and their own pool. Their basement, which has been turned into guest quarters is about as large as our house.
I am planning on popping out early tomorrow to get some pics of the neighbouring houses as they are bordering on the mansion type stuff.
See you tomorrowAnyway off to bed now

Life's a Beach

I have said here before, quite vociferously, that I hate the sea and I'm not too fond of the beach either. Of course a girl is allowed to change her mind. So when I say I hate the beach, I mean of course that I don't like the Welsh beaches. Don't get me wrong they are beautiful...but user friendly they are not. You have to be hardy to get used to the cold water and the hard sand and the rocks and the cold wind. I've done it, just don't enjoy it.
However, yesterday I went paddling in the Gulf of Mexico and that is a whole different crate of bananas. It was warm and the water was warm and the sand was as soft and white as sugar. So I am converted. I love the beach and the sea, so anytime V and the kids want to go to the beach...fine by me, just fly us out to Alabama, baby, and we'll paddle okay?
And if that was not all, after the kids were taken back to the cottage and the men had agreed to look after them for the evening, Steph and I went shoe shopping, then we found a bar with a pianist and a sax player playing soft jazz/blues and we drank marguritas!
Sara, Thomas, tel John from me that this mission business is tough man, very tough :)
Oh and I am going gift hunting today. It is half way through the trip and it's time to be starting to think about going home. So if you want anything in particular guys, let me know okay?

Orange Beach

Is not orange...

It is white, like snow. The sand is powder, the sky a hot turquoise and there are brief brave tufts of sea grass poking through where it can.

The houses here are almost all built on stilts and are painted in ice cream colours. There are palm trees and terns strutting their stuff on boardwalks and the sun is pouring down. It is even a bit warm for me!

The beach house is a large open plan bungalow, cool with tiled floors. The yard is sandy, though somehow the owner has managed to coax a lawn to flourish in the front and there are handsome olive trees growing in the back.

Today the Preselys and the Hills parted company for the day. So, left alone in America for the first time we tried to visit a mega mall that is near by but instead managed to get terribly lost and went round in circles for at least two hours. We stopped for lunch, lemonade and massive hamburgers doing a lot to cheer all the grumpy females in the car. In fact I did not have a beef burger I had...get this...a bison burger. I kid you not!
I thought, I've spun bison down, I might as well see what they taste like too, so there you are, my culinary adventure for the day. I have to say that the first half was very tasty, but the second started to taste quite liverish so I struggled to finish rather, but I got there. I've eaten bison. Now that's not something every Welsh girl can say.

Signing off for now but I am in Orange Beach library typing this. So now I know it is here and it is within walking distance I belive I will try and get back tomorrow if I can

'til then...take care of yourselves my loved ones

Sorry for radio silence...

We disappeared suddenly to a cabin in the woods. It was stunning. And no Internet...how did I cope for three days without it? I don't know, it's all a bit of a blur. But seriously, we had a lovely time fishing and paddling in a boat on the lake, just messing about in boats as Ratty would say.

We are out now and have been speaking at a church in White House Fork, I think it is called. We are at the pastors house now, chilling out after a humungus lunch at an eat all you like buffet. V had three helpings of fish and creamed sweet potato. It was good. I had a steak so big it was hanging off the edge of the plate,I had sweet potato too but mostly stuck to salad and fruit or else I am going to be as wide as I am tall coming home...

People here are really sweet, so generous and funny. Steph and I are doing a women's conference this evening so woo hoo baby, lets see where this one goes.

We are having a ball here. I am high on friendly atmos and heat. It is a pleasant 80 s out. Love it, love it...

Don't know what the internet access is going to be for the next few days so I'll see you in about another four days when we a re back in Huntsville if not before.

We are travelling further south tonight to a beach house, how glamourous that sounds! Sunglasses and bikini for me, who knows, I might come back with a little bit of a tan!

In a Cavern...

Saw my first raccoon today, it was dead but hey you gotta start somewhere. We are on the way to Cathedral Caverns in the foothill of the Appalachian mountains. Huge tree massed hills. Just saw a peacock green corvette mmm, yeah baby and we are rolling along in the church van, all ten of us, listening to blue country rock

Now Todd has changed channels and we have found bluegrass Gospel...yee haw!

You might guess that I have copied this from the rather jiggety longhand that I wrote in my journal on the way to the caves...

The caves hold several world records, largest cave mouth, tallest stalagmite, highest frozen waterfall and I think the highest ceiling, but don't quote me on that one. Though one of the cave rooms we were in measured as high as a twelve story building.

The way was wide and well paved, we took the strollers down there no problem. The guide was unfortunately soft spoken, so we missed quite a bit. But the actual cave room that the caves get their name from is just stunning. I took a few photos, but they just didn't do it justice. Got some postcards to send to Rose's school instead.

On the way out I got a "cave kiss" which is a drop of cold water from the ceiling and is considered to be good luck, as opposed to a "bat kiss" which is warm and is not good luck at all!

Afterwards we sat in a log cabin type porch affair, warming up. It was cold in there and at our deepest we were 240 feet below ground, so the comparison is not surprising really when you think that it is 104 degrees out here!

There is every chance that we will finally be able to visit the neighbourhood pool this evening. I think we will all enjoy that.

It is now 9.20 pm with you
Thinking of you

Space Odessey 2007

Did you know that Huntsville, Alabama was a prime force in the American space programme? Neither did I. But apparently it was/ is. NASA is a massive employer in the town and there is a Space and Rocket centre here. Which is what we went to see today. V, T, me and three (kids) all toddled off to investigate a space museum. The men and kids were fascinated, but I am sorry to say an awful lot of it went over my head, space exploration not being my bag really. But I did like the inflatable solar system on display in the shop. Almost bought it, but then got mentally embarrassed. "Yeah I went to America and bought the solar system" It just didn't go somehow...
But I tried out some kind of lunar command module. For such a small space, these astronauts have got to be big chaps. I fitted quite nicely in the cockpit, but I couldn't reach the ceiling switches nor the foot rests. Another career nipped in the bud. I am too short to explore space :(

The Girls and I tried out a special scales that told us how much we would weigh on different planets. I can't remember how much we would weigh on Mars but on the moon the girls would weigh 8.5 lbs each and I would weigh 17lbs. A bit far to go to lose weight I think. Though some people I know would think it worth the effort I am sure!

Dash home then to be ready in time for some friends of Todd and Steph to come for dinner. Miss Sadie made Southern fried chicken, squash, beans, corn on the cob and collards to eat with Banana pudding and/or lemon meringue pie for dessert. I am telling you, I am eating for fun out here, something I rarely do, but the food is too good to stop eating just because you are full. I can see I am going to have to have a fruit and salad day soon just to give the system a rest or else I'll be going home with gout!

Buffi and Mark were very friendly, fun people who have just adopted a little Chinese girl and it turns out that Buffi is a blogger too. So I will be popping over sometime soon. Come along and check out the voyage that is adopting from a foreign country with Sadies Journey Home. (link up soon)

Despite some truly magnificent mosquitoes, the kids played in the pool until it was almost dark. It is in the low 80's here at about8.30 pm. All this and banana pudding too.

Hope you guys are weathering the gales alright. I hope my house still has a roof... Anne, if it is convenient, would you drive up there sometime this week and check on Zac for me please? Thanks a lot.

See you guys, hope you are all okay

Busted!

Do you recall my boast that I have been cuss free for four days? Well back to zero now that I saw my first live cockroach. I don't think this house has heard such a stream of imaginative invective in its entire history. Thankfully it was just Todd within hearing distance and I gave him very clear and direct instructions as to the immediate dispatch and disposal of the creature. Only there were a few more bleeps in my verbal sentences than the one that I have just written
I think I had ample excuse really... it was scuttling man!
Steph has just assured me that it was a fair sized roach, about an inch and a half. So could I have got away with more if it had been a cockroach king? Who knows... hope I don't see the King of the Cockroaches and let rip while Todd's mum is about, she would not be amused.

Big Sky and Silence

Well as silent as you can get when there are six children in one house, which is not very. But still I was silent most of the day. We have had a big week, there is no doubt and invitations to speak are starting to come in gratifyingly busily. I just felt the need for a quiet day. The internet has been playing up rather so contact may be a bit dodgy for the next day or two. Annoying is an understatement, but there you are.

Went for a walk this evening with three youngest while men and three eldest went to see live music in a park. Sounded like fun but something of a crush. I preferred my walk

See you

What Siani Did Next

Off to church now. It is 10 am here, about 4pm with you. Church on the Move will be starting soon. I hope you have a good one, hope you say one for us and that someone dances at least once.
V and I are speaking in church this morning. I think V is singing too - probably Land of my Fathers. I am probably speaking a little on the history of Wales, Neath in particular.
The girls are all spandy nice in white crisp cotton, hair plaited and hats on. We look very British I guess. V in cream linen and me in my Audrey skirt with foamy petticoats, rather like the skirts that Mummy used to wear in Africa. It is surprisingly cool, the tulle keeps the fabric away from the skin I guess.
The off to the Pastor's house for lunch and a get together. Still on best behaviour. Hey! I haven't cussed for at least four days! Not once. Isn't that amazing? Perhaps America will break me of a habit I could never before be bothered to break. So I sound like a lady as well as look like one...but as we all know appearances can be deceptive.
So, got to go. Hope you have had a happy day, I'm thinking of you in the heat of a Southern summer afternoon and you are eating your tea and tucking yourselves up in your cool Welsh beds.
Have a pleasant evening and sleep well.

oh and Cyril...no way darling! :) x I refuse your challenge without hesitation!

Update
9.15 here about 3 am with you

Have had a truely awesome day. The service was great, the songs were strange but the feel was wonderfully similar. I danced, V sang. They prayed for us, the kids went to Sunday school and then I spoke for a little while about Wales as I said I would. Anthony sang Hen Wlad fy Nadai and one of his own. The congregation was very generous to us.
The Steph got up and spoke a little leaving the field clear for Todd who gave a socking good sermon about being transparent before people so that God is clear in our lives.
We prayed for people and it was just wonderful, I think just about everyone wanted to speak to us afterwards. The most remarkable being a half cheyenne/cherokee lady who was interested in first peoples. She had married a man whose family hailed from Raglan and she was delighted when I described the castle to her, she almost could not believe me when I told her that I had visited it several times.
People were so very kind. Have I said that I love it here, but I guess it is easy when one is being made such a fuss of. Still, it is fun...

Then we went to Joel's house. He is the pastor of the church and man did we eat. Beef, chicken, stuffing, gravy, beans, peas, a pasta salad, rice, and a hugely mad jello salad. Yes! Seriously, jello salad! Oh my gosh... It was pale opaque green and it had grapes and cherries in it. The kids loved it but I had a dickens of a job actually getting them to give it a go...It was quite nice actually but probably on the weirder side of American cuisine!

The house is set in ten acres of grass and woodland. After lunch I went for a walk with some of Todd's cousins. I saw massive pine cones, a bluebird feather, poison ivy, sassasfras tree, from which they make root beer and muscadang vines. It is spent muscadine but they call it muscadang. The feather and the sassasfras are going in Rose's journal. I was told about coyote, snakes, raccoons ( I'd love to see one - cute little bandit faces) and assorted bugs. They had a pretty good joke on me about leaping roaches, mercifully short but fun while it lasted. I was truely horrified...roaches that jump at you, can you imagine? But they assured me that they were joking when they saw how revolted I was. They did however, find for me a goliath beetle (dead thankfully) and some kind of giant ant (very much alive but a scurrier not a scuttler so that was okay). The Goliath beetle speaks for itself, I took a photo, and the giant ant was too fast for me to catch on camera but he was a brilliant scarlet with tips of black. Very dramatic but not as dramatic as its bite, which is quite something apparently.

Then we sat on the porch swing and drank iced tea in the clear heat of a fading afternoon. We watched the kids play on the tree swing and rested, fanning ourselves. We talked about Harper Lee whose hometown is not terribly far from here, blue grass music and hypo-glycemia. Nothing like an eclectic conversation to round the day off in a pleasant manner.

Tired now, had the second shower of the day and despite two cups of coffee, I am ready for bed and 9.45 pm! Honestly, what a lightweight!

Todd has to check his e mail now so I'm being evicted from the 'puter. So hope you are sleeping well, see you tomorrow. Love you guys.

Scuppernongs are not the only fruit...

But they are certainly tasty. Yes scuppernongs - I kid you not! What a word! It is a fruit belonging to the grape family. It looks like a greengage or a rather butch gooseberry and it tastes unique, very refreshing, grapey texture but the skin is really tough.

It was cooler today, 98 degrees rather than 102. (!) Today we went to a farmer's market. Cowbridge it was not, cataracts of tomatoes, peppers, watermelons larger than cannonballs, squash of every size and description from huge sweet potato squash to the pretty little patty pans, dainty in shades of buttercup and cucumber. There were pickling cucumbers, home made preserves, tiny figs and shiny baby plum tomatoes, aubergines larger than I have ever seen. Just the sight of all this produce got the gastric juices going. I felt very happy wandering around picking up these good things grown in such fierce heat and light. I knew they would taste wonderful. So we had ratatouille tonight for dinner with roast chicken and noodles. And strawberries and melon, grapes... and scuppernongs.

The latter has a pretty story attached actually. I was just looking at these strange fruit and a kind looking elderly lady came up to me and asked me how I would say the word. I told her that I had never seen them before and of course she picked up on my accent. She knew I was Welsh straight away! Her husband had been in the military and had been stationed there for some time but the name of the place escaped her. We chatted and I told her how much I was enjoying my stay here. You know me, when I enjoy something it kind of beats off me in waves doesn't it? She was delighted that I was so thrilled with everything and she invited me to taste one of these scuppernongs, (such a charming word, I can't stop writing it). They were very tasty and I told her so, she was so pleased that I was pleased that she bought some and gave them to me as a little present!

How can you fail to enjoy a country where complete strangers are so generous?
Miss Katie, you will never read this, but thank you once again. You are sweet.

Off now to give the kids a bath. Church tomorrow, lunch out, visiting with the pastor (an uncle of Todds) and generally doing the social pretty. Best bib and tucker and that means shiny angelic (looking) children...It is just about half eight at night here, gone 2 am with you. Sleep well...we are all fine here.

Introducing...

A Guest blog writer - my fantastic nephew James, this entry has been copied from comments and slightly edited for language :)

Yo yo yo, how are things in the US of A? Very good thanks :)
Mum is shrieking at me because she wants Nanna and Daddo to see this as well. I told her that I can get a connection up at their house and then she starting freaking out that I was stealing an Internet connection! lol You can't please some people, but you could always start by being legal about things...
I can just imagine V laughing about that if he reads this. Yes
Well, it didn't rain at all when we were in the Cotswold's. It was amazing! No rain in Blighty, that is amazing... I want to go back. Henry IV was good, we went to see it in Stratford-upon-Avon. We also got to see a street entertainer by the name of MAGIC STEVE! cool
Dad stunk out the kitchen with the cheese that he bought, and Tom surprised me by creeping into my bed in the middle of the night one time.lol He'll never live it down!
There were a lot of things to do there, table-tennis, pool, and there was an arboretum (i think that's how its spelt) Spell checker?
Me and mum are going to go get Freya now so I'll be off.
Hope to hear from you soon.
x Give my love to them all won't you? When are your results out? Let me know okay?

To See a Mockingbird...

Went to the park this morning with the kids. It was early so not too hot. The kids had a great time. Adam ran twice round a baseball diamond. I felt hot just looking at him.

On the way back we saw a mockingbird, never seen one before. Spent the rest of the trip quoting Harper Lee at just about anyone who would listen. Mocking birds are so cute. A little larger than a thrush but the same bobbing tail and flight as a wagtail, same kind of pied pattern too. It almost of made up for the fact that we are in the wrong season for fireflies. I so wanted to see them but Todd was pretty dismissive of the chance of getting to see any. I'm not giving up hope yet though.

The rest of the day has been spent getting the rental car. A hoofing great big Cadillac, oh my! And the silly suckers have insured me to drive it too! It is an automatic which is bad enough (automatics always seem possessed to me, I was permanently fighting the only one I ever drove as it always seemed as if it wanted to pull out of junctions on its own) But it is also roughly the same size as a minibus. It is the biggest blinking car I have ever seen. V loves it.

Anyway, so the plans for this evening includes me pottering around the back streets in a caddi, yeah baby! *thinks fiercely* On the right, on the right... And possibly watching Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mocking Bird. Now if I can only find a recipe for mint julep and I'm a happy girl.

It is 4.55 pm here so it must be close on eleven with you. Hope y'all are doin' just fine.
love you guys.

What Siani Did

I remembered that I haven't told you about the church meet last night. The church building is in three parts, one of which is an old gymnasium. So we, the four of us Todd, Stephanie, V and myself were asked along to talk to folk about Wales and the culture and what Todd and Stephanie had been doing there for the past two years.

It was a wonderful few hours of sharing my country with people who probably will never see it. To try and sum up my culture in an hour...hard work really but you know me, when I get talking it takes a shovel on the back of the neck to get me to shut up! I talked the hind leg off a donkey. Storytelling, music, the bardic tradition, the conquest by the Normans, the Rape of the Fair Country, the Poll Tax riots in the 80's and the general political apathy that afflicts the UK in general...I talked for Britain, quite literally.
But hey, they asked me right? Like I'm going to play the shrinking violet...that's not why I'm here! So I talked Wales up, I talked COTM up and I had a really good time doing it.
So, so far, it's been good.

The mall today was weird. We went in and it was rather like any mall in the UK really. Bright, cool etc but the shops were a little funkier. They were playing Talk Talk and REM on the music system so I felt right at home. We had a Ben and Jerrys half way through the marathon. Never had Ben and Jerrys before. I think mine was called cherry garcia and I had a latte, so sugar, fat and caffeine and I was good to go for the rest of the afternoon. Jeepers I was full after that! But what was weird was that there I was, feeling right at home, then we stepped out of the cool into this wave of heat and I saw a car go by with a driver on the wrong side and this peculiar sense of dislocation came over me. I don't think we are in Cymru anymore Toto!

I am now shopped out. Sara I got you the Yankee candle tarts, you didn't specify a fragrance so I got you a selection and I cannot get your blog up sweetie, have you given me the correct address? I want to see how you guys are doing.

Take care my darlings. Still a long time to go before I see you again but we are having fun and the girls really love the warmth and the cooking. You should see Lily pack the grub away, you won't recognise her when the little lard ball gets back home!

Baby it's hot outside!

It is blazing out here! Mum, Anne, you would love it. Dad - your ears would drop right off! lol (Thomas you must tell them what lol means.)
I was made for warmth like this I tell you. My body has reverted to the Malawi zone effortlessly. Poor V is hanging in there, but he ain't a natural like me.

Today we are off to the mall. Need more clothes and a decent handbag and a hat, cos it is hot. Have I said that already? Even the folk that live round here are commenting on how warm it is. Apparently they are in a drought situation and the weather is more like July. I don't care. I am catching enough warmth to see me through a Welsh winter...shuddering at the thought of the mist and clouds that will shroud our valley and then I look outside and the ferns and glittering leaves and the paddling pool which is warm now in the heat. Daddy, why did we leave Africa?

Anne, this is the life baby. We have to keep the door closed to keep the warmth out! And the crickets and tree frogs are chirping like mad all the time. You would love it, it's just you. I am loving enough for the both of us though. But I wish you were with me...mint juleps all round. Shame the house is tt ( and the fact I don't know how to make a mint julep, but you know what I mean)

Hope you are enjoying the soggy Cotswolds and Henry V, and to coin a phrase, once more into the breach dear friends once more... I'm off into the freeze of an air conditioned mall. I think I'll take a cardi!

Day Two

It is 4.55 pm British time as I wrote this this morning. I copied it down as I could not get to the internet at that time. But I have since discovered that our hostess has become a silver surfer! Hurrah for valiant older ladies who let poor addicted bloggers get their fix daily now. I was concerned...really I was.
Anyway, the following is a retrospective.
Oh, and before I forget, the arnica tablets were great Sara, thanks for the tip :)
It is 11am and I have six children prancing round me in various conditions of dress. There is a paddling pool and they are splashing like little seals and eating, not fish, but chunks of chilled watermelon. The crickets are whirring and I am in the shade of a peach tree I believe it is, with said bowl of watermelon at my feet. It appears I am a natural Southerner.
We were very tired when we got into Atlanta but immigration was utterly painless. The border guard was really friendly, commiserating with V that he had three daughters, and that his (guard's) daughter was 11 going on 17 and the bane of his grey hairs etc etc.
And when we stepped out of the terminal...oh my! It seemed like a joke! It was envelopingly, effortlessly warm. At 10 pm! (ish). I loved it. So soothing on the lungs, not quite like inhaling steam, but so clingy and melting. And the breeze was like a very heavy silk on the skin.
The four hour drive to Huntsville, Alabama was surreal. Falling in and out of sleep. We figured out that we had been on the move for 25 hours. It was about seven am British time when we got to sleep that night.
And we were in pretty good shape considering (Mind you, we were so full of arnica tablets we rattled!) So no jet lag so far...though the humidity is playing silly b's with my hair. It has gone curly and fluffy. But if that's as bad as it gets, I'm good.
Just a last word about breakfast. Just to assure my mum that we are eating well.
Mumma, this morning your daughter and grandbabies ate:
biscuits (not like our biscuits, more like a kind of soft scone) with butter and homemade peach preserve which was like candied peaches in fruit flavoured honey.
Scrambled eggs (lots)
thin strips of crispy bacon,
fresh strawberries
and watermelon.
Buttermilk to drink (acquired taste, but I'm getting there) and orange juice.
Oh and grits! Just call me Scarlett. I ate it with butter and hot salty bacon. Stunning, pure carb - love it. So I guess I'll be putting the weight on in no time at all
:) so don't worry about us mum, in fact I could get used to this in a big way.
We are off to a mid week church meet tonight, I'm looking forward to it. I think its quite a big one and an utterly new experience. Such fun!
See you tomorrow and with any luck I'll have some pics to post
Take care my loved ones...

Journey Out

16:20 finally boarded the plane. The twins fell asleep almost immediately, all cosied up in their baby traps (car seats, inconvinient to carry but almost worth the hassle).

16.40 Take off! Twins slept through it, I hung on for grim death and laughed at myself the whole time. Didn't let go of the armrest though!

20.40 Half way across the Atlantic. Altitude 34000 feet. We are just below Greenland. Handy little computer map embedded into the head rest of each seat before your very eyes. The kids are quite happy, Lily is playing with a hair band. Honestly, here I am loaded up to the gunwhales with toys, crayons, books etc. They have cartoons on continuous replay and they are playing with a hair bobble!
There is a little turbulence but its not bad. It is rather like being on a train..

Just under four hours to go before we land. We are now flying over New Found Land. All that I know about that is the poem that John Donne wrote.
"Oh my America, my New found land"
Quite a sexy one if memory serves correctly. Is New Foundland sexy? The dogs are built like bears I know that.
Don't worry the altitude is getting to me I think...

...1840 miles to go. Good grief, whose idea was this?....Mine
Static has turned me into a Vulcan. (now there's a distracting sentence) My hair is plastered to my head and my lilac top has brought the delicate shade of lavender under my eyes into a blooming display of weariness.

And there is still immigration and terrifying border guards to go. Yay!

Thank you

Thanks for the comments guys. So nice to hear from you.

Update

Plane delayed for two hours. This of course will impact arrival time. It could take longer than two hours of course, who knows. I won't post again unless we are delayed overnight. Other than that we hope to make it to the States today but at the moment we have no more information than that.
Anyway, don't worry about us. We are okay, everyone is in good spirits and we have found a tidy hidy hole where the children won't annoy anyone. So Plenty of shops including an accesorise so I am a happy bunny.
Speak to me again at midnight...
see ya!

Hi

Using this to update loved ones on American trip and every thing
So:
We are at Gatwick, checked in and waiting for the flight which should be in about a little over an hour. It has been a good journey so far. No strops on anybody's part so far. Let's hope our luck holds out

See you guys on the other side of the pond!

Love you lots

Spot the Stupid Bat...

Yup...I'm here sitting with my foot up after having danced as part of a church outreach service this evening in the Castle Hotel. Fantastic time, serious drumbeat going, guitars, off I went leaping about the place and didn't notice anything except the joy of the Lord. Until the music stopped that is...Oh dear, foot is up like a melon, so no dancing in the town square tomorrow :(

Pass the painkillers please...

Craftless Week

Have been reading over this ol' blog of mine and I have to say it is not as crafty as it was. There are several reasons for that of course. Injured hip means no spinning, no dancing either come to that. Lack of visible progress on Cobweb makes for a dull photo and I haven't been doing anything very much apart from cobweb when I have a clear half hour to sit and craft.
Preparations for the America trip has really chewed my time up too.

So, with that on my conscience may I recommend The Yarn Museum to get a fibre fix. The galleries of handspun are enough to make you weep with envy and covetousness. Oh dear, that has got to be a few sins I've just recommended. Okay, how about: these pictures will lift your heart with the wonderful expression of creativity that the Lord has placed in the human heart and mind. That's better. It's hard being a born again nutter when a character is as flawed as mine :)

Have a perfect day guys...

Friday Five

Friday Fiver

1. Favorite pastry?
Maple and pecan danish whirl

2. How do you like to waste time?
blogging, day dreaming,

3. How would you describe your complexion?
pale but otherwise very clear.

4. What do you hang on to that you should really get rid of?
difficult one that, I'll get back to it :) what ever it is I'm not letting go!

5. What is the last thing that made you hurt?
I trod on a slug last night coming in from the wood pile. I was barefoot too. That made me nauseous - it squelched!
But in general I take darned good care not to hurt myself.

Thursday - Love is All Around

Two of my favourite guys V and Tom. (I have a soft spot for Toms)

OK, Now I Know

You Are Cyclops

Dedicated and responsible, you will always remain loyal to your cause.
You are a commanding leader - after all, you can kill someone just by looking at them.

Power: force beams from your eyes

Another Busy Day

This getting ready don't half keep you on your toes. I have even more shopping to do - retail therapy- I love it.

And there is a birthday BBQ to go to (is it rude to take knitting to a party? V thinks so, I am now unsure as to the etiquette of it "Hi, lovely party but I brought my knitting in case I have to sit next to the mad nutter/bore/teenager". Not that there will be many nutters or bores there but...oh I don't know) Anyway I got her a lovely present so she can't complain if I want to sit quietly and knit can she? All my friends know I am eccentric like that. Oh well...

And Tom, my wonderful eldest nephew is staying with us overnight. The girls will be delighted. They do their level best to climb all over him in the morning and he, like every other teenager on the planet is nothing but a tumescent smelly heap of limbs and duvet before ten am. And there are my three fairies, like larks rising, squeaking "Tom, Tom, come play!"
It is hilarious, I take my coffee up and watch the show in comfort.

As spinning is still out and lets face it, I'm still on the seascape lace weight so it's more of the same really. Ditto with cobweb. Have you ever seen Blackadder II? Well, I am like Nursey with Captain Rum's beard, it looks the same only there's more of it. So no pictures of crafty stuff today

But...

Here is as crafty as this blog is going to get today. I give you Zac aka McCavity aka Fagin who swiped almost a whole packet of organic wafer thin ham and carted it off to his odoriferous lair to enjoy as second breakfast. I must love him or something because what did I do?
I took a picture of him licking his chops after a fine meal. Ahhhhh!

This Morning

This is Wenallt Farm doing its Brigadoon impression. I took this while standing on my doorstep early this morning. Because there is a river running through the valley we get some beautiful misty mornings when the season starts to turn. August is early for mists but it has been such a freaky summer. It wouldn't surprise me if we have a heatwave in September.

Getting Ready...

Well, I've finally got my backside in gear and have started to pack for the trip. Honestly, you think that there is not much to be done and there is loads really. Hand baggage restrictions, 100 ml bottles, ziplock bags, how big in visual terms is a bag 56x45x25 cm? I cannot see it in my head.

And what am I going to do for eight hours in a flying tin can? I cannot take my knitting, (sharp object) ditto embroidery, crochet is debateable and of course spinning is right out :). There is only so much TV I can bear and listening to music had never really occupied me although I am taking an MP3 player. I suppose I could write but I am dreading boredom. I will go nuts. Okay, I have the kidlings to look after and trail over the plane with but eight hours man in one spot. Help me guys, I need suggestions.

Have got a fair bit of last minute shopping to do. And I'm getting rather excited...wheee! I am going to America!

Gadgets

I was asked the other day what kind of gadgets I use/like when I am crafting. It is an interesting question because I so rarely isolate what I use in those terms. They are not gadgets, they are tools and very often they are cobbled together as and when I need them.

Spinning - I use no gadgets. Except a ball winder, very useful for the centre pull ball that is so hard to achieve any other way.I have to travel to the Guild for that though as I do not posess one, and they are rather expensive really. I have read that you can do the same with a nostepinne (cheaper by far) but I don't have one of those.

Felting - love dry felting and needles are always in demand as I break them so often. Especially the fine ones which are what I use most frequently.

Knitting - I made myself some stitch markers ( and Nicole sent me some beauties) so I always use them. There is something about these cute little beady things that makes them collectable isn't it? A row counter would also come in handy :)

Crochet - I like Surina wooden crochet hooks. I have the very chunky ones but none in the finer guages. I have metal for that but there is something so pleasing about the feel of the wood. Silky almost.

Angelina Fibre - not a gadget but such a treat to have in the work basket and a little goes a very long way indeed.

I like all kinds of sheepy stuff, dragons, lions, cats, hedgehogs. And that is all I can think of at this time of night. I'm off to bed right now :)

Ouch!

Do you see the vertiginous heels I was wearing when I was dressed up as Audrey? Three and a half inches at least. Well, I wore them on Saturday too to a hen night. I danced a little bit and today I cannot move. I managed to wrench a tendon down my right leg and I am stuffed for running, dancing and even spinning. Rats :(

So I am sittin' and knittin' and not much else. I have to rest as I am dancing on Friday at Martyn's out reach meeting and I may be dancing as part of the streetwork going on on Saturday. And if I dance on a wrenched hip I am looking at serious trouble.

The kidlings have torn upstairs apart and I don't care 'cos I can't see it. At least until tonight when I haul my sorry carcass upstairs and pass out in horror at the mayhem.

No spinning for the rest of the week! How will I live?

The good news is that V has rented Happy Feet for us to watch. At least somebody will dance today.

Waiting

Took a friend to casualty today. She dropped a monitor on her foot, as you do, and needed to check out the swelling. They got her through triage very quickly. It was the x ray that took the time. Equipped with my knitting I didn't mind but I had forgotten how bleak waiting rooms are. There were no magazines and the TV had a cage over it, something I had never seen before.

There were the leftovers of a hard Saturday night in Swansea. Three truly massive men, bar room brawlers or doormen, hard to tell really and one of them had been glassed in the face. Crikey I thought, could you imagine the size of the bloke that would glass the likes of him?
Apparently though it was a woman that had attacked him and his mates were laughing at him like a pair of school girls. They thought it was hilarious. They sobered up a bit when they had to phone his mum but they were back to the giggles soon after. He took it good spirit considering his lip was in half.

I sat there with my knitting (Cobweb, yes still) and thought about how I had wanted to be a nurse when I was a young woman. Not on your life would I do the job now.

My friend was fine, just bruised. But due, we think, to the litigious society in which we now live, the doctor, despite all his many years of training would not confirm that the bone was not broken. Rest and painkillers were prescribed. If it gets worse, come back.

So no bones broken and I got two humungus rows of cobweb done. Good news all round, except for that poor brawler who got seven stitches and a flea in his ear from a tired staff nurse.

Farewell Party

Last night we sent to Todd and Steph's farewell party. They are off for a year back to the US to raise support for their work here. They are both close friends of ours and will leave a huge gap in our lives. I could get quite down if I think about it too much, so to liven us up and to say goodbye in style, Sara organised a Hollywood themed party.
Any chance we get in Church on the Move to dress up is pounced on with glee. V went as a character from the Matrix and he looked pretty good. There was an Indiana Jones complete with muddy shoes and a whip! I was very impressed. There was a Betty Boop, a Dolly Parton, a few Reservoir Dogs - looking quite alarming for such delightful young men - there was an Austin Powers - very scary, Jessica Rabbit and Steven Spielberg to name a few. And I, in a fit of nerve, went as Audrey Hepburn. Nothing like aiming high!

So on with the LBD, cigarette holder, long black evening gloves, pearls and some truly funky earrings. I darkened my hair and away to go. I think any woman in her thirties hits the spot with that look and I was pretty pleased with the effect.

Today I am off to St Annes Church to have a look at the Hobbies and Passtime exhibition. They are raising funds so might as well hand over a few bob to keep the old place going. It is a beautiful church and a landmark in the village where I grew up. I thought about taking the wheel to show. I might, might not.

Friday Five

Friday Fiver

1. Tea or coffee?
Depends on the time of day. First thing, breakfast and elevenses need fresh coffee. All other times require tea. Especially after meals and any other time I need a cup. I am a tea junkie.

2. Do you speak your mind?
If the occasion demands it. I am generally pretty sharp tongued and try to keep that under control.

3. What is your escape?
Reading, writing, poetry, places in my head to visualise - a walled garden or a head land by the sea being my favourites.

4. When is the last time you cried?
Last night actually. I cry often, over an astonishing array of things.

5. What are your bedtime rituals?
Heck, I'm just glad I'm going to bed. Umm. Cocoa or warm milk and honey, brush teeth, read, oblivion and if I'm unlucky, two hours later - insomnia.
Such is life :)

Thursday - Love is all Around

This was taken one evening at Ffald Y Brenin. There is a lovely wood fire there and Lily and I curled up in front of it. The wood was crackling gently and the scent of the smoke was whispering autumn all through the room. I was so sleepy I nodded off holding her. Nothing like a nice warm cuddly baby to make you feel soporific.

Well, That's All Over...

Phew! Haven't read that hard for a long time. Settled down to some serious Pottering. Read it in about 24 hours and I think it's the best she's done since the first one. I loved shell cottage, favourite bit actually and the dragon. And as for that one dying in the end. I was so annoyed I actually shouted at the book. But they were a favourite of mine...what can I say? And as for Snape...oh my gosh, but I knew that too. It was good seeing all the taily bits being woven in.

I'm off now to read all seven right through just to get the flow again.

Miles of Silk!

It will become a bag eventually
honest!

more silk!

I am still plugging away with the seascape lace weight. It takes a deal of spinning and this is easily the finest thread I have ever spun. It is taking ages! So I don't suppose I'll be speaking much about that until I'm done which should be about 2009 sometime :)

I haven't done the felt bag yet. It'll probably sit there for a bit the way a half finished project usually does. Making me feel guilty until I get tired of it and away we go in a blur of activity.

Aside from that I am slowly getting things together for the America trip. Getting quietly excited about it and in the same breath quite sad. Odd really. I am longing to go, I've always wanted to see America, but I have never been so long away from Wales since I first came to live here as a child. I will miss the whole of August. Balckberrying, harvest, such as it is with the rain we've been having. The leaves will have started to change by the time we get back and it will be the turn of the season.

How much though we will have to tell! Stephanie says that internet access is limited where they are and I must believe her. But I am hopeful that I will be able to find an internet cafe somewhere on our travels and keep the blog updated. I cannot take the wheel, cannot take too many books, no spinning, no blogging and no knitting, on the plane at least - eight hours! No knitting, what the heck am I going to do?
And I must leave my family and friends behind while I swan off into the west. Leaving behind all my attachments and addictions in one go. Oh dear...

Still, at least I've got V and the kidlings. And it will be warm. I could stand a little sun right now.

Hello Again

Well, that was great fun. Three days of teaching on the prophetic, creativity , vision and dance.
The late nights chatting meant that it has taken me a day to get my sleep back!

I was particularly pleased with the dance, considering that I have not taught for at least a year and it is utter chutzpah on my part to lead a dance class as I am not a dancer. But people started moving in worship and that was just wonderful.

I got a fair bit of spinning done too as we gathered in the main room together and no one minded that I quietly span while the teaching went on. And I knitted up the kermit merino into a satisfactory rectangle ready for felting and lining to make into a bag. At least I will have one handmade pressie to give at Christmas time.

I wish V had not lost the camera, well, mislaid it really. But pics up soon.
Til then...ttfn

Ffald Y Brenin

Off tomorrow to our favourite retreat for a few days, until Saturday I think.

Ffald y Brenin means Fold of the King, (do check out the link - fantastic photos) It is high in the middle of the Preseli Mountains in Pembrokshire. No traffic, no noise. Just red kites (birds)and silence and the presence of God like a blanket around us. It is one of the most amazing places on Earth. I kid you not.

There is a fantastic craft room there with tons of space so I am taking the wheel and I will sit and spin , looking out at the valley below while soaking up the peace that passes all understanding and tea and biscuits in roughly equal quantities.
I am doing a teaching on spirit dance, that is - worship through dance. It has been years since I have taught. We will have to see how it goes.
Now I have packing to do and printing of notes to get going with. See you soon. Take care.

One Deep Breath - Bodies of Water

I knew that science was not for me when I asked my physics teacher why clouds were not heavy when they had so much water in them. I failed in the most thorough way to understand a word of his patient instruction. I love science, the patterns that I know are there but cannot understand no matter how I try. I'll stick to poetry. A girl has got to know her limitations - unlike clouds...

No one has told them
they are not supposed to fly.
Water floating by.

Just a Bit More Yarn...

Plied Kermit Merino Chunky

Seascape Tussah Silk. Roving spun into lace weight.

These yarns are everything I love about spinning. Texture, colour, vibrancy, luxury and usefulness. There is not a hobby like it.

Don't forget...

Jump Twosday over at Patois' place.

Again, another warning. Don't go if you're nervous :)

Spinning Day!

Don't you wish you lived here?

Bunking off to Sharons today to glamourous Upper Cwmtwrch. To sit by the river that runs through her garden and spin and knit and chat and drink tea and talk wool. I'll take my camera and hopefully, if the batteries play along I'll have something to show later on.

Finished spinning the kermit merino. Plied up quite nicely really, not perfect but good enough for rock music. Sharon is an expert felter and probably deserves the title fibre artist as she has that edge of vision which I so admire and yet lack so obviously! But she is very generous and allows me to pick her brain at any time. And for this I will take chocolate walnut brownies, which due to my recent disasters with Iolo's cookies, is all that I have the confidence to make right now.

TTFN my lovlies !

Update 21.50 same day
Confession
I didn't take brownies...or cookies. I ran out of time. But I took soup...tinned I'm afraid. I'll lose my Nigella badge if I'm not careful. Sorry Sharon, but there is always next time. After America!

Now that is what I call a bad dream

6.30 am, not as early as most times they wake me but still. Rose wanders in sobbing
"Mummy I've had a bad dream."
Snuggle under the duvet, mop up tears...
"Tell me all about it darling."
"Well, I was swimming in the sea and an octopus grabbed me with one of his testicles."
I beg your pardon?
No, it was not a typo.

Hey, It's Sunny!

Wheeee! Look at that yellow thing in the sky! Haven't seen that in a while.
That's it. No spinning for me today. I'm off down Neath to check out what the nutters in Church on the Move are doing on the town square. See ya later!

Additional below

Went to town to help V and Uncle Daisy do some street work. The carnival was on today and town was packed. We spoke to relatively few people but the ones we did.

A drug addicted ex convict currently living rough in the old abbey until the winter at which point he normally commits some not too bad crime, gets caught and jailed through the winter to be released when the weather gets fine again. He says it suits him. Catholic boy, prays, likes God, didn't want a cup of tea or a hot meal, just wanted to say hi I think.

And the man suffering depression with his little girl on his knee, slowly and undemonstratively weeping into her hair as Daisy prayed for him.

And the wonderful woman that encouraged me so. She was profoundly disabled, partially sighted, wheelchair bound, withered arm and a speech impediment but her mind was as light and agile as a butterfly. I am happy she said. I don't need prayer. We chatted for a little while and she gave me a bag of malteasers when she left. She blessed me with more than chocolate.

We are doing another one next month, just before the American trip. Possible dancing, drums and banners. I am looking forward to it

Just remembered this covers an item in my 101 in a 1001 days : no 70

3. Do you eat fish?
Not really.

4. Have you ever seen Finding Nemo?
Only a thousand times.

5. What do you think of Sushi?
Cook it and I'll think about it.

A Welsh Valley in July

These were taken a few days ago, The mist was slinking down the valley and the early morning sun looked wet and glossy. I went outside to take a couple of photos and the air smelled of Autumn. The first breath of the turning season. The weather has worsened now, very grey and cold.

I had a lovely day in Cardiff yesterday with Carol, a day full of first times for me. I've never been to Lush, jeepers I walked into the store and hit a wall of mingled perfumes. What an intoxicating experience! Bought several rose scented bath bombs, a slice of orange blossom soap and a tiny pot of coffee flavoured lip balm. Yummy. Laura Ashley had a two for one sale on and two Holly Go-lightly skirts later I could no longer say that I had never shopped at Laura Ashley! It was a day of presents, suprises, fun and laughter. A wonderful day. Thankyou Carol.

Thursday - Love is all Around

Love is all that saved these two from a terrible retribution after they had broken into my art supplies and raided my green acrylic. They had a great time in the bath afterwards as acrylic peels off in layers. They were like a pair of zombies picking at each other. Ewwww!
